Galaxy Note III to get Flexible Display?

The next generation Galaxy Note series, the Samsung Galaxy Note III, is likely to come with a flexible display if rumours are to be believed. It will also be built using premium materials not commonly found in Samsung phones.

According to Samsung geeks over at SamMobile the next generation note will come with a OLED display. Sadly the rumours aren’t of a flexible display that you can morph the shape of or which continues around the phone like we reported on recently, but rather flexible upon impact in order to prevent screen breakages when dropped.

The OLED display will be fully plastic in order to be flexible, which some may think will make the phone look less sophisticated but thankfully the premium materials rumoured should more than make up for this.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note series has been getting a little less attention than usual recently thanks to the groups launch of a rival phablet in recent weeks called the Galaxy Mega. The Mega’s largest size phone will be 6.3″ inches, which is substantially larger than the current Galaxy Note II which is 5.5″. The rumoured Galaxy Note III will apparently start at 5.99″ and have a larger version somewhere in the 6″-7″ range.

The current Galaxy Note II has a screen resolution of 720p which is HD but not the Full HD 1080p which has become the norm for phones launched this year. We’re expecting Samsung to make the next Note 1080p at least, especially as pixels per inch will be lost if the resolution is kept the same while the screen is enlarged.

Apparently the phone may even be lighter than the current Note II due to using a plastic substitute for the glass usually found in screens.

Rumours are that the new Note will be unveiled at the IFA 2013 event which is taking place in Berlin between the 6 and 11th September this year, with the phone being available shortly afterwards in time for the Christmas rush.

While the screen is ditching glass for plastic, if rumours from a week ago are to be believed the device will replace plastic on the rest of the device with something more premium. This is partly due to a consumer perception that plastic Samsung devices aren’t as long lasting as rival devices using aluminium such as HTC One and iPhone 5.

What the materials will be remains to be seen, but if they are replacing glass on the screen don’t expect a glass back panel like iPhones have. Instead we’re more likely to see a metal HTC One style design.

Other rumours that have come out about the new Note include having 8 cores in a Exynos 5 Octa CPU, coming with a 13 megapixel camera and having LTE 4G built in. The device will also likely come with the latest version of Android at release date which is likely to be Android 5. The current Android version is 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

The rumours of a flexible display are backed up by earlier leaks from the OLED Association and also make sense as a way of differentiating the Note series from the Mega series for the South Korean manufacturer.
